Celje

Celje with its surroundings

Celje, which lies by the peaceful Savinja river, is the capital of the Savinja region, named after the river. The town prides itself with the legacy of the Counts of Celje, the famous aristocratic and ruling family, the last great Slovene dynasty. Their prince's castle in Celje was besides Trieste the centre where the European cultural and artistic flows of that time met.

The surroundings of the town were rich with fields of hop. Only a few kilometres from Celje there is a small town of Laško, where in Pivovarna Laško, the brewery, the most popular beer in Slovenia is made. The little town is also well-known among tourists, since it prides itself with thermal spas Zdravilišce Laško and Zdravilišce Rimske toplice.

On the East side of the region there is a town of Rogaška Slatina, famous for the springs of excellent natural mineral waters (Donat, Tempel, Styria). The town is also renowned for the glazier tradition, since it is a place of making of the first-class glassware.

The North of the Savinja region is covered by the mountainous Alps. In this marvellous natural environment, through thousands of years Logarska dolina (the Logar Valley) was created, which counts as one of the most beautiful glacier valleys in Europe. Wonderful waterfalls are hidden here, bearing crystal clear water that runs straight from the faultless mountains. The valley is the starting point for mountain paths, and there you can also ride horses, bike, ski, sled, climb frozen waterfalls, or just rest. Logarska dolina is an ideal spot for relaxation in wonderful natural environment with an amazing view.

One of the most famous tourist destination near Celje is also Zrece which is famous for their spa resort Terme Zrece and popular winter resort Rogla
