Description
Your tour begins at Postojna Cave, the largest karst monument in Slovenia and a major tourist attraction. The cave's underground landscape is unique worldwide for its electric train ride, allowing visitors to traverse tunnels, passages, galleries, and halls with ease. The proteus, also known as the olm, is the cave’s most famous resident and can be observed up close during the visit.
Next, the tour continues to Predjama Castle, located near Postojna in the village of Predjama. This medieval castle has stood for over 800 years, built into a 123-meter high vertical cliff above the Lokva River, which flows into the underground world beneath it. As Europe’s only preserved cave castle, Predjama offers a rare glimpse into medieval construction techniques and defensive strategies.
The castle’s historical significance is enhanced by the story of its most notorious owner, Erazem of Predjama. During a 15th-century siege, Erazem used the castle’s unique location and secret passages to withstand besiegers for over a year until betrayal ended his resistance.
