Description
Begin your journey at the Tourist Information Centre (TIC Maribor) in the city center. Stroll through Maribor's key landmarks and squares, including the Main Square (Glavni trg), with the Town Hall and the Baroque Plague Column, raised in memory of the plague that swept the city.
Continue to Freedom Square (Trg svobode), and hear the curious story behind the 'American detective' statue that stands in its middle. Learn the story behind the Donkey Corner in the middle of the city.
See Maribor Cathedral (the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist), at the heart of the old town. Walk along Gosposka Street, the elegant shopping and merchant street that traces the city's 19th-century prosperity.
Head to the Lent district along the Drava River, Maribor's oldest quarter and one of the oldest riverfront settlements in Europe. Cross the Old Bridge over the Drava.
Arrive at the Old Vine House (Hiša Stare trte) on Lent, where the world's oldest vine still grows against the facade. Along the way, hear the story of the city from its first written mentions in the 12th century, through its 19th-century industrial and cultural heyday when the railway and industry brought economic and cultural prosperity, the Habsburg era, and the occupation during the Second World War.
Learn about the lesser-known and darker chapter of aircraft parts manufactured in secret underground tunnels carved beneath the city, and the network of tunnels that sheltered residents during bombing raids.
Beyond the history, hear the legends and curiosities that give Maribor its character, including the story behind the 'American detective' on Freedom Square, and why he stands where he does. Learn how the authenticity and age of the world's oldest vine was scientifically proven, and how the people of Maribor lived across different eras — not just the architecture, but daily life, trade, and culture.
End your experience at the Old Vine House, where the story naturally meets taste. Partake in a tasting of a local wine, poured in the company of the world's oldest grapevine — a fitting close to a walk through a city built on wine, story, and hospitality. A non-alcoholic alternative is available on request. Before parting, the guide is happy to share personal recommendations — places to eat, drink, and wander — to round off the day in Maribor beautifully.
