Slovene Museum of Christianity
Located in the old prelacy at the Stična Cistercian Abbey, The Slovene Museum of Christianity presents the main Slovene museum institution for collecting, studying and exhibiting movable religious cultural heritage.
Currently the museum offers two permanent exhibitions which present rich material and spiritual legacy of Christianity in the area.
One of the permanent exhibitions is entitled 'History of Christianity in Slovenia' and presents the unique exhibition of this kind in Slovenia. Chronological order of the history is well presented and organized in twelve exhibition rooms. The presentation starts in the third century and then continues through a rich journey through 1700 year old history.
The second permanent exhibition entitled 'Life behind Monastic Walls' presents the history of the oldest operating monastery in Slovenia - Stična Abbey. Visitors can admire the 20th century art history collection, the Leopold Kozlevčar cultural history collection, dalmatics and other vestments from the seventeenth to twentieth century, monastic workshops the room of saints, a reconstruction of the Stična scriptorium, the collection of ecclesiastic vestments encompasses embroidered chasubles, , the collection of liturgical vessels and more.
Visitors are also amazed by a gothic Cloister and the basilica of the Sorrowful Mother of God.
Guided tours for visitors are possible from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8.30 am, 10 am, 2 pm and 4 pm and on Sunday at 2 pm and 4 pm. Scheduled guided tours for groups are possible only by prior arrangement from Tuesdays to Sundays from 8 am to 5 pm.
