Weather Overview

If you view Slovenia on a world map, you may notice that it bears considerable resemblance to a chicken, which has resulted in us locals referring to our country as ‘our chicken’. If the similarity in shape isn’t immediately obvious, imagine the country’s north-eastern region as its head, the southern region as its fat little legs and the western region as its ruffled rear end. And like the anatomy of a chicken, Slovenia is a country of diversity, both in a cultural and topographical sense. On this page we are concerned with the latter, as it directly relates to the country’s differing weather patterns.

Below is a five day forecast (use the drop down menu for specific areas) and below that is a detailed rundown of all things weather in Slovenia.

Slovenia is well-known for the diversity of weather on its four distinct topographical surfaces. The Alpine region spreading across the north-western part of the country has typical mountain weather as well as a strong Mediterranean influence. The main characteristics of the Alps are the abundant precipitation above the tree line and varied temperatures, which in the valleys range from moderate in summer to cold in winter.

Rok Kovacic – Local Expert: "The snowy winter in Slovenia is magical. Each year Slovenia gets covered by snow and this is just perfect for skiing and romantic evening walks. The temperatures can sometimes reach even – 25°C, however usually it won't be that cold."

A popular destination for tourists is the Primorska region in the south west - the coastline together with Goriška Brda and the Soca Valley. The region has a typically Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny weather throughout the year, and mostly mild winters.

Ivana Cosic – Local Expert: "The sun will shine brightly during the whole summer and it will heat the atmosphere even up to 38°C (normally it's around 30°C)."

The whole eastern part of Slovenia has a typical continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The area is well known for its gentle hills full of vineyards, spas and endless fields.

Lena Koter – Local Expert: "The spring is very lovely with all the flowers and trees blooming. The temperatures at this time of the year are pleasant, reaching 20°C and more. Late spring with first days of summer can be rainy so you won’t be surprised."

The Karst region is located on the south of the country and presents a unique landscape hardly found elsewhere in the world. Numerous Karst caves have occurred due to the distinctive soil and weather conditions – a mix of Continental and Mediterranean weather accompanied with Burja (a cold and dry north-eastern wind) makes the land perfect for drying famous Karst prosciutto.

Ivo Kovacic – Local Expert: "The picturesque autumn will be a bit more rainy but still convenient for holidays for those who don't like too high temperatures."
