Jože Plečnik (1872 - 1957) from Ljubljana is one of the most important pioneers of modern architecture in the world. His creative work shaped the image of three long-established cities: Vienna, Prague, and particularly his birthplace, Ljubljana, where his mark is so prominent and indelible that Plečnik’s Ljubljana as a unique city phenomenon is classified among the most original and most important holistic artworks of the 20th century from a global perspective. Begin your bicycle tour of Plečnik’s Ljubljana in STIC at Ljubljana market, where you will be given a bike and a helmet. Then, set off with your guide and ride across Plečnik’s market towards Navje Memorial Park, also known as the northern city park, which was designed by Plečnik in the late 1930s. Next, reach Žale, the central cemetery in Ljubljana, which is a true outdoor museum bearing Plečnik’s unique mark, and where you can feel the history and culture of the local people. The trail will then lead you on a cycling path towards Šiška, all the way to the St. Francis Church and its special design.  Afterwards, head towards Tivoli, the central park which is considered the green lung of Ljubljana. The park’s original layout dates back to 1813, but Jože Plečnik redesigned it between 1921 and 1939 and also created the connection between the end of Cankarjeva Street and Tivoli Castle. Next, head to the National and University Library, probably Plečnik’s most important work in Ljubljana, where you can treat yourself to Plečnik’s tea and gingerbread. Continue along the nicely landscaped embankments of the Ljubljanica River towards Trnovo and Plečnik’s House, where the architect lived and created from 1921 until his death in 1957. Finally, finish your cycling tour at the starting point.
