Ljubljana

Ljubljana with its surroundings

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is the administrative, political, cultural, economic and traffic centre of the country. The city has all the characteristics of modern and highly developed country centres, but has still maintained the kindness and ease of a small town.

Through the centuries Ljubljana developed and expanded under the castle hill on the left and right bank of Ljubljanica river. The oldest marks of settlement in this area are from the Bronze Age. On these prehistoric foundations the Roman town Emona was built, which represented the most favourable crossing from the Apennine Peninsula towards the North. In the 6th century Slavs settled here, but many other nations affected the development of the town and the Slovenian nation.

Therefore in such a small area of our capital you can admire beauty and mightiness of the remnants of the Roman Empire, the old centre with the medieval castle, Baroque facades which give the town a special baroque touch, and colourful bridges that reach from one bank of Ljubljanica to the other. Among these, Plecnik's Tromostovje (Triple Bridge) and Zmajski most (Dragon Bridge) stand out the most. The magnificent Tivoli Park gives the town green colour, and the building of the Ljubljana University stands in the city as a symbol of education.

Even after a few minutes of walking in Ljubljana you will be thrilled over its playfulness, since it reveals not only the historical legacy but also a modern way of life. In the very centre of the town you will find comfortable hotels, delicious restaurants, which offer tasty food from all over the world, charming bars where you can enjoy delicious coffees and snacks surrounded by the old lovely houses and colourful trees, wild clubs where people dance until the early morning hours, the most famous trademarks and enormous shopping centres.

Even in winter Ljubljana offers a very special experience, since the old part of town transforms into a holiday land. The marvellous and unique decorations shine between buildings and above the square, the alleys are full of stalls where you will surely find an ideal gift for your loved ones. On the main square there is an enormous Christmas tree, and when you order mulled wine with your friends and dance to the music, the holiday spirit cannot escape you any more.

During the year Ljubljana gets its charm also from the youth, since it becomes home to 40,000 students, and every month there are various concerts, cultural events and festivals.
